About Outage Sizer

Outage Sizer is an independent reference that turns published wattage tables, generator ratings and fuel figures into generator sizes for a power outage. It is not affiliated with any generator maker and does not sell generators.

How the site works

Appliance figures come from Generac's 2023 portable generator brochure, the Eugene Water & Electric Board's sizing sheet and Champion's wattage flyer; generator ratings from Honda, Westinghouse, Champion and Generac; fuel use from Generac's published table; and safety rules from the CPSC, CDC, OSHA and FEMA. The calculator adds running watts and the largest starting surge, the method those tables print. Every source and formula is on the methodology page.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong or a source has changed, email hello@outagesizer.com with the page and a link. Corrections go into the data file and the check date updates with the next build.
